Sotiris Dounoukos, Canberra filmmaker extraordinaire, will be heading back to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September for the second time in two years. His first outing being for his short A Single Body, winner of the International Category at the 2015 Canberra Short Film Festival; a double whammy no doubt. That film followed two French abattoir workers as they come to grips with their failed plans for a new life i.e Vegan Health Store?
If that doesn’t sound juicy enough, his first feature film Joe Cinque’s Consolation will be sure to impress. The film portrays the real life death of Joe Cinque at the hands of his then-girlfriend Anu Singh and the fall out that followed when it was discovered their mutual friends did little to stop it, because that’s what friend are for right… The event took place in Canberra and hence the film was shot here with some local talent in front of and behind the camera. The film is an adaption of Helen Garner‘s best selling book by the same name.
What’s even more exciting for Sotiris, is that his film has been included in TIFF’s Discovery program which proudly states its purpose is to find “The Future of World Cinema”, sheesh no pressure!
No matter, we’ll still be waving our little blue and yellow ACT flags and barracking for Sotiris and the team come September.
